ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how a combination of peripheral socio-political and socio-economic factors influenced Narendra Modi’s 2014 victory and India’s transition towards (right-wing) populism. It makes critical observations on the changes that occurred in India’s political and economic landscape following the liberalisation era – all of which influenced the outcome of the 2014 election and Modi’s ascent to power. The chapter then discusses the political and socio-economic performance trajectory during Modi’s first and second tenure as prime minister.
