ABSTRACT

The author outlines some contributors to negative treatment outcomes like relapses and premature termination. She also outlines the two healthy possibilities, ending treatment due to completion of behavioral, emotional and relational goals, or continuing treatment at the same or decreased frequency. Some clients have enough internal and external resources to move on once symptoms have been alleviated. Others find that the therapeutic relationship and the space to process stressors are important self-care elements to continue long term. This chapter includes examples of both outcomes, including input from post-treatment interviews. An adjournment session is featured to model healthy termination.
