ABSTRACT
This chapter gives an overview of the terminology of exemplarity and sets out the terminological conventions that will be used throughout the book. It begins by specifying the notion of exemplarity as a practice of giving examples. In a narrower sense, exemplarity provides a mediation between singularities and particular universalities. One strand of the terminology stresses the singular moment, while another emphasizes the universal moment. The main terminological convention is that the expression “example” indicates the singular moment, whereas “exemplar” and “paradigm” focus on the particular moment. The notion of paradigm is analyzed in detail. A paradigm or exemplar is an entity consisting of a paradigmatic sample, a method of applying it, and a universal property that it exemplifies.
