ABSTRACT

In the science fiction film and television genre, music often has more work to do than in other genres. Habitually, it has had to “do the imagining” for films and television shows that are unable to excel in terms of their images. A remarkable case study under scrutiny here is the Gerry Anderson-produced Space 1999 (from 1975 to 1976). Made in two seasons where the second totally reimagined the show, there are different assumptions and approaches in terms of sound and image, and music is crucial in the “rebranding” of the programme in its second season and rethinking the boundaries of the show's imagination.
