ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the comparative marriage networks in five tribes. The spread of affinal relations and resulting kin ties are gauged from the analysis of the patterns of marriage. It deliberates both the criteria for selecting spouses and the spatial distributions of affinal links. It explores some of their marriage-related social institutions, e.g. village endogamy, patrilineal exogamy, cross-cousin marriage, kinship distance, marriage network, repetitive marriages, the direction of marriages, bride price, uxorilocal marriages, observations on ascending and descending generations and so on. It traces the social space and geographical space. It further explores the prevalent types of marriages and rules of marriage.
