ABSTRACT

This chapter and Chapter 7together describe the household dimension of the family. A household is both a residential and commensal unit – consisting of a house and a hearth. The tribal households have been classified into two types – simple and complex. Simple household compositions are discussed in this chapter, delineating similarities and differences in various compositions of simple households and families and their genealogical depth over the generations. It also explores the development process of the household and its relations with various kinship compositions through time and respective social norms, rights and obligations.
