ABSTRACT

In the prologue, I recount how my ideas about experience have developed. This development began with my studies of Francis Hutcheson, first published in 1985. Some of its unanswered questions then led to an outline for a theory of experience in my 2002 book on Political Philosophy. I elaborated on this theory in 2008 in God’s Presence. This was an exploration of the varieties of spiritual experience. When studying the ideas of the prophet Zarathustra, I discovered that the structure of experience is changing in the course of history. Other dimensions of experience, such as imagination and creativity, showed similar patterns. These preliminary studies eventually led to the comprehensive and intercultural analysis of the History of Experience. In the end, the History of Experience paints a completely new picture of the history of humankind.
