ABSTRACT

The last chapter addresses the question: “What can we learn about dreaming from analyzing this dream series?” The first take-home message would be that the continuity hypothesis of dreaming, which is very popular in dream research, is not complete. The author suggests the CDC theory – thus, also included Discontinuity and Creativity – in order to address the question of why we dream about bizarre stuff in future empirical studies. One explanation might be emotional continuity; that is, the emotions are continuous with waking life but not dream content. The authors also formulated a two-step model for a possible dream function: (1) the dreams provide novel ideas (brainstorming) and (2) the waking consciousness can evaluate these ideas as to whether they are helpful in solving a given problem.
