ABSTRACT

Starting in the 19th century, dream researchers kept dream diaries to obtain material for their research questions. This chapter provides several examples of how a long dream series can provide unique opportunities to study dreams – opportunities that are beyond the typical research studies. A Hungarian psychology professor, for example, recorded dreams while being imprisoned for four years due to political reasons. A US researcher asked a dream journalist to provide ten dreams recorded prior to the terrorist attacks (9–11–2001) and ten years after and found an effect (intensification) of this event on dreams. A very long dream series – recorded over a time period of more than 30 yrs – provided valuable insights; for example, a woman dealing with her divorce after a long, stressful marriage.
