ABSTRACT

One reason why dreams are so fascinating is that dreams include extraordinary things, like flying. In addition, lucid dreams in which the dreamer can walk through walls or other weird stuff are extraordinary. In this chapter, one analysis is about dreaming about dreaming; that is, the dreamer records a dream, talks with others about dreams, or even does dream interpretation within the dream. The question why humans have flying dreams is not answered yet. Why do we dream about things that are not possible in waking life and never will be? This contradicts simulation theories that postulate that one function of dreams might be practicing skills that might come in handy in the future. The long dream series also provided support that lucid dream frequency can be enhanced by training but also showed – for the first time – that, years after stopping the training, the frequency of lucid dreams drops to pre-training levels.
