ABSTRACT

Names have profound connections to the roots of all cultures. Some names are sacred, so much so that they are surrounded by mystery and secrecy and are not to be pronounced. Many names have origins in religious traditions, connecting to figures less secret but no less honored. In cultural studies, naming and cultural linguistics are linked. In psychology, naming leads mainly to studies of neurocognitive performance or deficit, but a little digging can uncover interesting cross-cultural connections. Many interactive demonstrations of the cultural power and complexity of naming are possible. The question of whether a name can be changed, and how, can also be investigated. Ask individuals to suggest a name that they would choose if they had to “pass” in another culture and describe the reasons for the choice of that particular name. The discussion of naming need not be focused only on humans and human cultures; pets, countries, behavioral practices, and products need names too.
