ABSTRACT

Respect is one of the most frequently mentioned VICIs and also one of the cardinal principles in the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. The relation of respect to power and control becomes clearly visible when its opposite, disrespect, is considered. Groups that have experienced severe social discrimination may perceive the attainment of “respectability” to be a bad bargain involving the loss of autonomy and identity. For a more theoretical approach, consider collecting and taxonomizing instances of disrespect at the hands of VE (Vulgar Euphemism) individuals as described by Howard (2016). There are several sources for facework practice; Domeneci and Littlejohn (2006) provide numerous examples for individual and group practice.
