ABSTRACT

Here the authors set the stage for a framework centering culturally responsive teaching and learning through the arts, and explain how and why these particular iterative processes lead to liberatory outcomes. The SPIRAL framework has been designed to fluidly and flexibly support and coincide with the many educational frameworks already in use such as Universal Design for Learning, Teaching for Understanding, Backwards by Design, Culturally Responsive Practice, Socio-Emotional Learning, and Expeditionary or Project-Based Learning. It is a framework that guides intentional choice making in education structured in an antiracist lens with regard for the whole child, the whole school and the whole community.
