ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 is about the short story. The chapter explores the ways in which short stories are typically based around a single moment of recognition or epiphany. Discussing in some detail work by David Foster Wallace and Flannery O’Connor, the chapter suggests that short stories can often be read as elaborations of their own titles that also deftly embrace larger ethical, political, cultural and interpersonal questions. The chapter ends with a useful summary of points to ask about, and things to look for, in a critical analysis of a short story.
