ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 considers the increasingly significant category of ‘creative non-fiction’ by looking in particular at memoir and nature writing. The chapter seeks to identify the qualities and characteristics of creative non-fiction that distinguish it from the novel, on the one hand, and documentary or factual writing, on the other. Writers considered include Louis Chude-Sokei, Hilary Mantel, John Burnside, Nan Shepherd and J.A. Baker. The chapter ends with a helpful summary of the characteristics that set creative non-fiction apart from other modes of writing.
