ABSTRACT

It is important to avoid knee-jerk reactions to frugal innovations if we are to stand any chance of considering them for use in the UK. If we are interested at all in reducing healthcare expenditure and we are interested at all in exploring how to broaden our gaze away from just the usual suspects of the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, France, and Germany, then we need to find a way to appraise all innovations in a structured, systematic manner and not allow our snap judgements, and our coloniality, to interfere with that process. This chapter provides a practical orientation to that and introduces a number of frameworks that can be used to develop a structured, objective appraisal of frugal health innovations to help us imagine their value for the UK, rather than discount them prematurely. It Is easy to judge frugal innovations from low-income countries rather negatively.
