ABSTRACT

Currently, women carry more than 75% of the global unpaid care burden, a percentage that is expected to have risen due to the global pandemic, as children have stayed home from day care and school and sick family members have needed care. In some families, the increased care burden has translated to one person having to give up their paid work. Some fathers are in same-sex relationships and, hence, by virtue of their children only having fathers, have a caring role. In many cases, men also now have partners who will no longer accept being the sole or ‘primary’ carer for the children, but who require a fairer and more equal share of labour at home. Many who work nationally can especially struggle to find adequate work opportunities and they must accept to follow the work. And if a good father's measure is his ability to bring food to the table, and oftentimes also to pay for the education.
