ABSTRACT

This chapter delves more into the specific working conditions of the sector and which policies have been put into place to mitigate challenging working locations and contexts and required travel, which all have an impact on employees with children. This includes financial compensations, such as education and day care grants, support for dependants, settling-in allowances, and housing allowances. It also looks at different contract modalities of aid workers and the limits that consultancies, surge rosters, and temporary assignments have on access to benefits. It also specifically discusses parental leave and its impact on gender equality, making comparisons to Nordic parental leaves. It looks at the current sector standards in terms of parental leave and the inequality that parents face in terms of leave depending on an employee's contract, gender, and whether they are working nationally or internationally. It looks at the return to the office after having children and related policies that support travel, breastfeeding, and pumping. Finally, the chapter discusses different flexible working arrangements and policies and what should be considered in their implementation to make the workplace more conducive for mothers and parents.
