ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the approach of frame shifting, which is the act of focusing on how each of the domains of teaching (i.e., relationships, classroom management, and curriculum and instruction) may affect a teaching dilemma and also provide strategies for a solution. It begins with an explanation of the concept of interdependence, which asserts that each domain of teaching affects, and is affected by, the others. The first task in frame shifting is to identify the primary domain in which one has already framed their dilemma, which can be determined based on the words used in the description of the dilemma, the dilemma statement, and the focus question. Then the reader is walked through the frame shifting approach by changing the initial frame to focus on what else is happening in the classroom during the dilemma within the other two domains of teaching since the domains are interdependent. The grounding case introduced in Chapter 1 is used to illustrate how shifting the frame may allow teachers to see how other domains of teaching may come to bear on addressing dilemmas successfully.
