ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the caregiver burden and stages of emotions a family member experiences beginning when their loved one is diagnosed throughout the recovery process. Additional insight is shared about the difficulties inherent in navigating through the various levels of care within the medical system as well as watching their loved one navigate their stages of recovery. The physical, financial, and psychosocial impacts are described. The various needs for the family are addressed as the loved one recovers. Interventions to improve the caregiving experience are discussed. Lastly, the need for a family navigator to partner with the family throughout the span of recovery is introduced.
