ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the grammatical concept of pronouns, which are words that take the place of a noun in a piece of writing. While there are a variety of types of pronouns that can be used in writing, in this chapter we focus on the personal pronouns “I,” “we,” “you,” “they,” “she,” “he,” and “it.” The chapter begins by identifying and describing these pronouns and then discussing the importance of this concept to effective writing, using examples from published texts to illustrate their impact. Next, the chapter presents a classroom snapshot section, which describes Kasey’s experiences teaching her students about pronouns. The chapter then provides key recommendations for teaching students about the concept of nouns and a bulleted list of final thoughts on this topic. It concludes with a flowchart and two infographics that highlight important information and examples from the chapter.
