ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the grammatical concept of verbs. It describes what verbs are and provides examples of verbs that show action and those that convey states of being. After that, the chapter discusses the importance of verbs to effective writing, paying special attention to the ways that strong and specific verbs can clearly convey actions to readers. Next, the chapter presents a classroom snapshot section, which describes Kasey’s experiences teaching her students about verbs. The chapter then provides key recommendations for teaching students about the concept of verbs and a bulleted list of final thoughts on this topic. It concludes with a flowchart and two infographics that highlight important information and examples from the chapter.
