ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the grammatical concept of question words. It begins by identifying the question words “who,” “what,” “when,” “where,” “why,” and “how” and describing the information associated with each word. After that, the chapter explains that question words are important to effective writing because they clearly indicate to readers that a question is being asked and the type of information being requested. To indicate this, the chapter provides examples of sentences that use question words and describes the importance of these words to the texts in which they’re used. Next, the chapter presents a classroom snapshot section, which describes Kasey’s experiences teaching her students about question words. The chapter then provides key recommendations for teaching students about the concept of question words and a bulleted list of final thoughts on this topic. It concludes with a flowchart and two infographics that highlight important information and examples from the chapter.
