ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the grammatical concept of conjunctions, words that combine ideas or link statements in a piece of writing. It begins by identifying key conjunction examples—the coordinating conjunctions “and,” “or,” “so,” and “but”—and describing how each one is used. After that, the chapter discusses the importance of conjunctions to effective writing, explaining that they are important because they enhance the flow of writing by linking ideas and show the relationships between pieces of information. Next, the chapter presents a classroom snapshot section, which describes Kasey’s experiences teaching her students about conjunctions. The chapter then provides key recommendations for teaching students about the concept of conjunctions and a bulleted list of final thoughts on this topic. It concludes with a flowchart and two infographics that highlight important information and examples from the chapter.
