ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the grammatical concept of plurals, forms of words that writers use to indicate that there is more than one of something. It describes what plurals are and identifies different ways that plural forms are constructed. After that, the chapter discusses the importance of plurals to effective writing, noting that they allow writers to clearly express when there is more than one of something and to accurately describe situations in which this is the case. Next, the chapter presents a classroom snapshot section, which describes Kasey’s experiences teaching her students about plurals. The chapter then provides key recommendations for teaching students about the concept of plurals and a bulleted list of final thoughts on this topic. It concludes with a flowchart and two infographics that highlight important information and examples from the chapter.
