ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses what is meant by technology (i.e., math action technologies) and the ways teachers can use technology-enhanced math tasks to position all students as powerful mathematical explorers. Specifically, it discusses the ways that math action technologies can be positioned to provide ways for each and every student to (1) enter a math problem, (2) mediate mathematical discussions – regardless of your familiarity with the language of math or even the dominant language in the classroom, and (3) build personal and powerful ways of mathematical thinking. This chapter includes vignettes (with supplementary video) of pairs of students working collaboratively to illustrate the ways that teachers have used technology-enhanced tasks to position them as mathematical explorers. The chapter ends with a set of guiding questions to help teachers engage all students as mathematical explorers.
