ABSTRACT

Rapid developments in mobile technology provide opportunities to influence health behaviors at any particular moment. In this chapter, we highlight the history of technological approaches to health behavior change and the different forms that they can take including computers, the internet, smartphones, wearable devices and other forms of technology. In addition, we consider how behavior change theory can be used to bolster attempts to change health behaviors and evaluate the contribution of internet and app-based approaches to health behavior change. Applications are considered in relation to changing drinking, smoking, physical activity and dietary behaviors.
