ABSTRACT

In this chapter a range of classic (Operant Learning Theory; Social Learning Theory; Goal-Setting Theory; Control Theory), social cognition (Theory of Planned Behavior; Reasoned Action Approach; Protection Motivation Theory; Health Belief Model; Social Cognitive Theory), stage or hybrid-based (Health Action Process Approach; Transtheoretical Model), integrative (Fishbein’s model; Theoretical Domains Framework), modern and/or dual-process (COM-B/Behavior Change Wheel; Fogg’s Behavior Model; Reflective-Impulsive Model; Prototype Willingness Model) and maintenance (Relapse Prevention Model; Self-Determination Theory) theories are overviewed. Several of these theories are evaluated in-depth in dedicated “Theory Critique” sections that clearly list their specific advantages and disadvantages. Common issues with various models, including the intention-behavior gap, are also considered.
