ABSTRACT

This chapter examines psychology-based approaches to health behavior change. Research on six key determinants of health behavior (risk perceptions, attitudes/outcome expectancies, norms, self-efficacy, intentions and implicit influences) derived from important models/theories is reviewed. For each key determinant, the literature on the association between each determinant with intentions and behavior, as well as on how to change that determinant to produce changes in intentions and behavior is reviewed. A range of different health behaviors including promotion, risk and detection health behaviors are considered.
