ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter returns to the main objectives of the book, which are outlined in Chapter 1. The key theoretical and ethnographic intention of ‘qu(e)erying Islam’ around which the book is centred has cast a light on the formation of queer Muslim subjectivities (which some participants described as a process of ‘becoming’ or menjadi) and the connection of these ongoing processes with the emergence of agentic power. This concluding chapter explores the debates this book has contributed to by identifying three themes emerging from the author’s analysis: ‘becoming’ a queer Muslim; places and spaces, agency and power; and allies of queer Muslims. Furthermore, it reflects on the key directions in which future research could develop.
