ABSTRACT

In this second chapter the author translates, with a commentary, Śāntarakṣita’s Sanskrit verses in the Tattvasaṃgraha and Kamalaśīla’s commentaries on these verses in the Tattvasaṃgrahapañjikā. The author also attempts to explain and evaluate the arguments Śāntarakṣita and Kamalaśīla bring to bear on the theories of persons presented in the Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika, Mīmāṃsā, Sāṃkhya, Jain, Advaita-Vedānta, and Vātsīputrīya philosophical schools.
