ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 describes the association of colorism with occupation. Several theories are utilized such as deficiency, and social structure. The work of Jensen, Murray and Herrnstein considers their references to low IQ as the reason for racial disparities in occupation. The fact that dark skin is associated with less intelligence put blacks and other people of color at a disadvantage in the job market. Previously mentioned is the fact that cultures where the work ethic might be less valued disserves people of color. The fact is people of color are a culturally diverse and complex social population that may be less given to Western cultural traditions. Ultimately colorism by both blacks and whites combine for fewer people of color including blacks employed in certain occupations. Empirical evidence is provided to support this as fact. Furthermore, aside from evidence provided specific to employers and employees the empirical opinion of the public at-large concurs.
