ABSTRACT

This chapter provides essential foundational information about road crews and the roles that comprise them. It offers a definition of a road crew, outlines its features and discusses the key roles that members occupy. Furthermore, it includes an overview and critique of the word “roadie” that is commonly used to describe road crew members. This chapter establishes and analyses the significance of road crew members as “support personnel” within the hierarchy of the live music industry. This chapter also introduces issues related to the gender imbalance and minimal diversity within road crews that are important and consistent themes throughout the book.
