ABSTRACT

This chapter expands the understanding of the factors involved in making a concert happen. It provides insights into some of the taken-for-granted activities that are integral to the realisation of live music and the working lives of support personnel. It does this through an examination of a show day on a concert tour and the various tasks that take place throughout. This chapter demonstrates that road crew members are similar to other cultural workers in that their daily working lives are marked by a long-hours culture. The chapter also explores the temporary workspaces at venues that particular road crew members utilise and the important activities occurring within them. In addition, it highlights some of the documents that are significant for helping touring personnel to navigate life on the road.
