ABSTRACT
Mathematical literacy is the ability to use one's mathematical capabilities to better understand the world, its structures and events, and with that understanding to make better-informed decisions. In this chapter we explore the meaning of mathematical literacy from a theoretical perspective, sketching its history, the various ways it is described and defined, and its relationship to the different aspects of school mathematics.
