ABSTRACT

The chapter provides an integrated block of policy actions to sustain and more equitably share the gains of development in Bangladesh. The actions emphasise adequate investments in population groups and locations that have so far been left behind, supporting socioeconomic dynamism and inclusive labour market, building efficient and responsive government and institutions, and other relevant dimensions. A strong and well-designed social protection system is identified as a powerful lever of inclusive development in Bangladesh. The chapter also explores the potential of Islamic finance as a tool for promoting inclusive development in the country. The chapter notes that Bangladesh has moved closer towards applying the inclusive development tenets in policy making, but the challenge lies in the absence of any generic yardstick for ensuring that the country is moving towards a more inclusive development path. The reality is to adopt experimentation; and Bangladesh has to set its own pathway to inclusive development through drawing lessons on what works and what does not within the country’s changing dynamics of political, economic and social configurations.
