ABSTRACT

Originally part of a larger film community in Mexico City, Rafael Ortega remained in Mexico City as many of his film colleagues moved to the United States to work in Hollywood. This is when Ortega began making films with artists. His first project was in 1992 with Abraham Cruzvillegas. A group of artists with studios clustered in the famous building, the Licenciado Verdad, at the time included Francis Alӱs, Thomas Glassford, Silvia Gruner, and Melanie Smith. Operating largely through word of mouth, he eventually worked with Al?s on Cuentos Patrioticos (Patriotic Tales) in 1997.
