ABSTRACT

Cephus X. Johnson, affectionately known as Uncle Bobby, began the Justice for Oscar Grant movement when his nephew, Oscar, was killed by a San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit officer in 2009. His wife Beatrice X. Johnson, or Aunt B., began her activism on police violence in 1985 at the age of twenty-one. They work together to support Black families who have suffered injury and loss through police brutality. They especially emphasize their ongoing commitments and political activism as an effort to “find some freedom in the struggle.”
