ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to link the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to developmental processes in an effort to capture children with developmental trauma disorders (DTDs), who often meet criteria for a broad range of clinical syndromes. In doing so, the chapter describes PTSD in children, including a recent change made to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to include a preschool subtype of PTSD for children between the ages of 0 and 6. Developmental trauma is then discussed in detail.
