ABSTRACT
Chapter 2 describes current patterns of family formation, dissolution, and parenting as well as their causes and consequences, synthesizing and analyzing research from the fields of demography, sociology, economics, and psychology. The chapter explains the risks to children posed by current patterns. It also explains the growing socioeconomic divide in family life, why it is worrisome, and how it has developed.
