ABSTRACT

Masculine norms and expectations can obscure men’s vulnerabilities and some of the very real issues they face. Notably, men can be reluctant to seek mental health treatment, even when suffering from serious issues like depression, anxiety, and substance use. Suicide is a leading cause of death among males in the USA and has increased significantly over time. Social norms and a gendered expectation for men to display strength and avoid expressing their emotions contribute to these issues. There are an increasing number of design interventions that address men’s mental health and mental health in general. However, there are significant issues with much of this work, especially e-mental health interventions like apps and websites that often have no proven effectiveness. This case study explores the negative impacts of sex and gender norms and biases on males and masculinity and how some designers are surmounting the issues to develop compelling services and spaces for men in need.
