ABSTRACT

The following chapter cautions about fetishizing materialistic ideologies and their ideas of freedom, liberation, and justice by reminding scholars that Arab-Islamic epistemology adheres to the transcendent belief that the heart and mind symbiotically work out the entailments of law by balancing Reason (i.e., science) and Revelation (i.e., religion). The concluding chapter also reveals the schism between Arabian and European philosophical theology by deliberating that it is because Arab epistemology emphasizes the spiritual rather than simply the material that elevates Arab subjects – according to positivist jurisprudence and materialistic political philosophies – to the exception, therefore, a priori objects of sovereign necropower. It is this metaphysical schism around the idea of Being between Arabia and Latin-Europe that permits positivist “international law” in legalizing what revelation has declared immoral since jus gentium identifies rationalized-law as superior to revealed-Law. Put differently, an epistemology reifying reason over revelation requires displacement, slaughter, and racism for ontological coherence. This is manifest in that Arab-Islamic epistemology has historically fulfilled the function of an opposing ontological-mirror onto which the negative definition of sovereignty/civilization/citizenship itself is projected with the Arab-as-muselmänn framed as contra distinct to the “modern” universalized idea of belonging.
