ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the evidence base on teacher effectiveness, which has evolved over time, to identify characteristic behaviours and variables that either directly or indirectly affect teacher quality and the quality of teaching, and considers the key tenets of Professionalism and pedagogy which combines teacher expertise and research by focusing on the art, craft and science of pedagogy. The ways national and international organisations, practitioners and researchers are constructing a profile (or profiles) of Teacher Quality for developmental and evaluative purposes are then examined. Against this backdrop, teachers are encouraged to review the Professional Standards, Values, Codes of Practice and Professional Learning Frameworks that serve to guide their own professional development to reflect on and assess the quality of their teaching to identify areas they would welcome opportunities and experiences for further development.
