ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses current trends and implications behind the rapid growth of educational and digital technologies impacting teacher learning and professional development within the context of 21st schools, particularly in relation to nurturing digital competences. It explores Professional learning communities to examine how their various practices may support and transform the way in which teachers learn, particularly within Communities of Practice and through Lesson study. Informed by evidence-based research, key components of effective CPD are then considered. Against this backdrop, teachers are encouraged to reflect on their current priorities and developmental needs to create a Professional Development Portfolio in which they can gather evidence of their progress in relation to short-, medium- and long-term personal goals and career aspirations.
