ABSTRACT

The data used to characterize patterns of family backgrounds when the subjects were 16 years old once again comprised both SES and values measures taken from the parents themselves, in this case from the Parents’ Questionnaire administered during the subjects’ last year in compulsory school. However, when SES and values are considered together, as aspects of a pattern reflecting the home environment, parental aspirations that are oriented toward an advanced academic education for their daughters emerge across the entire SES spectrum. High aspirations are not restricted to families characterized by above-average levels of income and/or education. Through their extremely high levels of education and income, in combination with their academically oriented values, the High SES Brahmin were expected to have continued to provide strong support for their daughter’s advanced education. The pattern indicators of socioeconomic status, recoded as z scores, were fathers’ education and mothers’ education.
