ABSTRACT

This chapter explains three main areas of exploitation of women, namely forced prostitution, female genital mutilation and enslavement in the name of religion, where all have marital connections, but their ramifications and implications go far beyond the institution of marriage. Supplementing an attempt to influence the minds of the clients should be concerted efforts to resolve contradictory attitudes of governments to the 1949 Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others. While it can be observed that exploitation of children the world over occurs because secular laws are not enforced, under Islam exploitation of women is caused by enforcement of religious laws which have been repressively interpreted. Polygamy remains a good example of an institution which, like chattel slavery, could be abolished on the basis of Mohammad's pronouncements.
