ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines federal policies that support mental health initiatives in states. It outlines the federal role in education, how laws are passed, the role of states’ congressional representatives in policy making, and how advocates can engage them during the policy making process. Federal funding sources to support mental health in schools are also discussed, including the role of appropriations, community-funded earmarked projects, and grants from both the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Tips for school-based mental health workforce development and mental health services in schools are presented. Building strong relationships with key decision makers and other advocacy opportunities are shared.
