ABSTRACT

Once statutes are passed into law, there are often corresponding regulations that must be set. This chapter reviews the role of state regulation in supporting access to mental health providers and supports in schools. Advocacy does not end with the legislative session, and it is important that advocates continue to voice their concerns and solutions during regulation hearings and meetings. Advocates will learn what state regulations are, how they support state statutes, who creates regulations, and what the regulatory process is. Tips for increasing access to school-based mental health providers and increasing access to mental health supports in schools through regulation are offered. Finally, advocates will learn about regulatory examples from across the country relative to curricular standards, establishing mental health competencies, training on the impact of trauma on learning, and ratios and ratio improvement plans.
