ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the role of institutes of higher education in school-based mental health provider training and workforce development. Having adequate mental health services in schools is predicated on having an adequate number of mental health professionals to deliver those services. Readers will learn what institutes of higher education are, their role in the policy making process, and how the ARTERY Pipeline Framework (Dockweiler, 2019) can be applied to address workforce shortages. Tips for expanding training programs for school-based mental health providers are offered, with coursework aligning to profession-specific standards. Advocacy opportunities are discussed, and readers are encouraged to remain engaged at this level to ensure policies are enacted as intended.
