ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the gold standard for long-term mental health reform in schools. The ARTERY Policy Framework will ensure that schools have enough school-based mental health professionals to deliver mental health supports to students. The shortage of school-based mental health professionals in schools is pervasive across the country and is the number one barrier to access to mental health supports. If states can remedy their school-based mental health workforce issues, they can begin to tackle other mental health issues in schools because they will have the staff necessary to do so. This chapter outlines the pillars of the ARTERY Pipeline Framework including the necessary advocacy and policy components necessary at every layer of the education system. Alignment of policies to support proper implementation of mental health initiatives is key. Examples of how Nevada is successfully implementing the ARTERY Pipeline Framework will be provided.
